TAKE THE CAPE BRETON CHALLENGE!

Take the Trans Canada Highway east over Kelly’s Mountain and stop at the Bras d’Or Lookoff to view Point Aconi at the tip of Boularderie Island. Take a photo and date it for future reference!

Continue over the Seal Island Bridge then take Exit 14 along Old Route 5 to the fishermen’s wharf in Big Bras d’Or and through the farms in Millville. Continue along the TCH to gasoline alley between Exits 17 and 18, turn north along Point Aconi Road until it becomes the dirt road to the lighthouse, then turn left along Sherri Lee Lane until you come to a stunning and breathtaking view of sorts!

Get out of your car and explore the area! Go fossil hunting on the beach, or picking cranberries in the bog, or follow the rabbit and deer tracks through the coastal Crown woodlands and wetlands, or look for fish in the orange coloured brooks and salamanders around the pond! Then check out the view from the new haul road built out of sulphide bearing slag through the middle of it all out to the shore of the Atlantic Ocean under some kind of “stop work” order! Also visit the Fossil Museum in Sydney Mines before the government renders it extinct too!

If irreparably destroying our environment and water resources in this fashion for generations to come at this first of fourteen such strip mining sites is good for Boularderie Island to Port Morien, then it's good enough for Inverness to Port Hood and the rest of Nova Scotia too eh? If not, tell Rodney!
