It's up to province to halt movement to strip mining

Cape Breton Post

As member of Parliament for Sydney-Victoria, I write to express concern over potential strip mining in my riding. I have spoken to many concerned citizens and have heard their opposition loud and clear. I have seen the effects that strip mining can have on a community.

The community has grave concerns about any effort to strip mine, including serious concerns about the water table, the condition of the land after mining is completed and the land is "re-claimed", and the effect mine site run-off would have on the lobster industry and the fishing industry in general in the surrounding waters.

As we know, it is the Nova Scotia government's responsibility to determine whether a permit will be granted to strip mine in Cape Breton. With this in mind, I will be requesting that the province rethink its path with respect to strip mining in my riding.

I feel the province should stop the process, step back, and listen to the community before any strip mining permit is considered. All concerned citizens must have the opportunity to be heard.

There is too much at stake to allow strip mining to go forward without full community participation in the final decision.

- Mark Eyking, MP
Sydney-Victoria
