Strip mining foes seek community help

Bras d'Or - The Citizens Against Strip Mining are in full support of the United Mine Workers of Cape Breton in their endeavors in the opening of Donkin Mine.

According to group spokesperson Donna Stubbert, although the group does not agree with strip mining on Cape Breton Island, it does support underground mining and hope to see Donkin opened in the near future.

Stubbert added that the opening of Donkin would be a major boost to the economy, creating full time employment

"It would supply much needed coal to local residents, pensioners and businessess. There are many benefits from underground mining, however this is not the case with strip mining," she said.

"This type of mining rapes our land, destroys our environment, affects nesting sites and wildlife habitat and most of all, puts our wells in jeopardy. Large companies are the only ones who benefit from strip mines."

She added that the Citizens Against Strip Mining extends an invitation to the miners of Cape Breton to work with it on promoting the opening of Donkin Mine, creating long term jobs and in helping to put an end to the madness of strip mining on our island.
